Things To Do In The Berkshires: Umpachene Falls

A short 15 minute drive from Warm Welcome Great Barrington is Umpachene Falls Park. This tucked away waterfall is located in a park that’s easy to get to and absolutely stunning, it’s a can’t miss thing to do in the Berkshires.

Follow your Google map and drive down a winding country road and you’ll pop up at an open clearing in the forest with easily accessible parking, that’s usually pretty empty (the only time you’ll get a bit of a crowd is on a hot, hot summer day when the taking a dip in the cool water is simply irresistible). A river (Konkapot River) runs along the one side of the park, where there are public BBQs and a play set as well as a nice open grassy space, but if you walk just one or two minutes up a slight slope, the main event will be revealed: Umpachene Falls.

You can just peek in from there and catch the beautiful view of the falls, complete with a naturally soothing soundtrack or you can walk up a bit (hiking shoes or sneakers recommended) and explore the rest of the falls.

Pack a bathing suit for a summer visit, if you walk uphill a bit, you’ll find some wading pools tucked into the falls that make for a perfect summer cool-down.

If you’re looking for an easy outdoor activity, something leisurely after your hikes in the Berkshires, a visit to New Marlborough’s Umpachese Falls is a must-do.
